Hi Edmonton,
It’s one of those Friday forecasts where you enjoy the sun while it’s here, then keep one eye on the sky. Thunderstorms are possible today, and the weekend looks soggy again.
Inside today, we’ve got affordable housing work wrapping up, rain fallout around the city, Green Shack programming coming back, and a lot happening before Monday. Personally, I’d flag the Elks starting 3-0. Not bad at all.
— The Edmonton Edit
⚡ Quick Hits
882 affordable homes got renovated across 11 sites. That matters in this rental market.
95 Avenue near 170 Street is about to get slower. Plan the west-end drive.
The Elks are 3-0 after a late win in Winnipeg. That’s their best start since 2017.
🌤 Edmonton Weather
Today starts with some sun, then gets cloudier and breezy with afternoon thunderstorms. High of 26, low of 14.
Saturday cools down to 18 with thick cloud and showers. Sunday keeps the rain going, with a high near 19.
After the week we just had, keep the umbrella close and maybe don’t trust a dry sidewalk too much.

📰 What's Happening
Renovations complete on 882 affordable housing units in Edmonton
A big affordable housing renovation project is now complete in Edmonton. It refreshed 882 units across 11 sites.
The project had $23.3 million in listed funding. That included $12.8 million from the federal government and $10.5 million from the City of Edmonton.
HomeEd also reported another $10.3 million in improvements for 1,076 mixed-income townhomes and apartments at 15 sites. The work included foundation fixes, electrical upgrades, energy-efficiency work, and accessibility improvements.
The big thing is simple: this keeps hundreds of lower-cost homes usable in a city where affordable rentals are already under pressure.
Those renovated homes stay in Edmonton’s affordable and mixed-income housing supply. That’s not flashy, but it’s the kind of thing people actually feel.
Edmonton water supply alert lifted after heavy rain strained stormwater systems
Edmonton’s emergency water supply alert has been lifted after intense rainfall pushed stormwater systems close to capacity.
The city recorded about 104 mm of rain over three days. EPCOR got more than 600 flooding-related calls during the storm period.
The rain also hit daily life around the city. Sports fields, ball diamonds, boat launches, low river valley trails, and Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre were all affected.
Some surrounding areas, including Beaumont, Tofield, and parts of Beaver County, still had alerts after Edmonton’s was lifted.
It’s a good reminder that heavy rain here does more than wreck a picnic. It can affect water use, drainage, trails, recreation sites, and basements pretty quickly.
Residents should keep watching City and EPCOR updates for trail, facility, and stormwater impacts.

🏛 City Update
99 Street streetscaping work continues downtown
Construction on 99 Street streetscaping started this spring and is scheduled to wrap up in October 2026. Judy Padua Way work is expected to finish by mid-September.
The 100 Street Library Parkade entrance has reopened, but the exit timing was delayed by weather. Downtown drivers, pedestrians, and anyone using parking around 99 Street should expect more access changes.
This is one of those projects where the payoff comes later, but the detours are very much a now problem.
More phased closures and access changes are expected as work continues.

95 Avenue Renewal brings lane reductions near 170 Street
The 95 Avenue renewal covers the stretch between 163 Street and 182 Street. Construction is expected to finish in fall 2026.
Northbound lane reductions near 170 Street and 95 Avenue start the week of June 29 and are expected to last about a month. Southside access at 167 Street and 95 Avenue stays closed until July.
For west-end drivers, this means delays around a busy commuter route. Build in a bit of extra time, especially if 170 Street is part of your usual routine.
Lane reductions continue through July while crews restore roadway areas near the intersection.

City Arts Centre closes temporarily for rehabilitation
The City Arts Centre is closed from June to September 2026 for rehabilitation work. The upgrades include structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work.
Programs and summer camps are being moved to other City facilities where possible. Families who use the centre will need alternate arts and recreation options through the summer.
The centre is expected to resume service in fall 2026.

🏒 Oilers & Sports
Edmonton Elks beat Winnipeg 23-18
The Elks pulled off a 23-18 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. T.J. Luther scored the winning touchdown with less than a minute left.
That win moves Edmonton to 3-0. It’s also the team’s best start since 2017.
The win matters because it came in Winnipeg, where Edmonton had not won a regular-season game since 2018. Early season or not, that’s a nice little confidence boost.
