Hi Edmonton,

It’s a grey, showery Friday, which feels extremely on-brand for the first big June weekend. We’ve got a lot happening anyway: Africanival is back, Chinatown has a free block party, Pride events are popping up, and south Edmonton has more LRT construction to plan around. The one I’d tell a friend about first is Africanival, because free, food, music, and Eastwood Park is a pretty solid weekend combo.

— The Edmonton Edit

⚡ Quick Hits

  • A Stony Plain daycare crash ended with every child safe. That’s the part that matters most.

  • ETS has June route changes, so check your stop before blaming the bus.

  • Africanival runs all weekend at Eastwood Park, and it’s free.

🌤 Edmonton Weather

Today is Friday, June 5, and it’s the kind of cloudy, damp day where you’ll regret trusting the sky. We’re looking at showers today with a high of 16 C, then more clouds and afternoon showers Saturday with a high of 19 C.

Sunday cools down to 14 C with more showers, so outdoor events are still very doable, just not exactly patio-shirt weather. Bring a rain jacket, wear shoes that can handle wet grass, and don’t be the person surprised by June rain in Edmonton.

📰 What's Happening

Children safe after van crashes into Stony Plain daycare

A scary scene unfolded in Stony Plain on Thursday morning after a van crashed into Young Champions Daycare and OSC. The crash triggered a gas leak, forced an evacuation, and brought emergency crews to 48 Street near 50 Avenue.

The big relief here: the children were safe.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m. Parkland RCMP and Stony Plain firefighters responded, and daycare staff had already moved the children out by the time officers arrived. There were 18 children and two adults inside the daycare at the time. No children were injured, and all of them were accounted for before being reunited with their families.

A daycare employee in her 20s and the male driver in his 30s were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The crash also ruptured a natural gas line, which led to the building and nearby area being evacuated until ATCO confirmed the scene was safe.

That is a lot for any family to get a call about in the middle of a Thursday. It’s also one of those incidents where the staff response really matters, because getting kids out quickly changed the entire story.

Parkland RCMP are now investigating what led to the crash. They’re asking anyone with dashcam or video footage from the area between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to contact police.

🏛 City Update

ETS makes June route and schedule changes

ETS is making June service changes across the transit network, including reroutes, schedule adjustments, and frequency updates. Route 500X is being rerouted downtown to improve arrival times, and several downtown stops will no longer serve that route after the change.

The plain-language version: your usual bus stop may not be your usual bus stop anymore. Riders should check updated schedules and stop information before heading out, especially if they rely on downtown or commuter routes.

Use the ETS trip planner or route schedules before travelling after the June service change.

Capital Line South work advances at 23 Avenue

The City has posted a new construction update for 23 Avenue reconstruction tied to the Capital Line South LRT extension. The work is focused around the 111 Street and 23 Avenue intersection, which is already one of those southside spots where traffic can get testy.

This project is part of the larger LRT extension from Century Park toward Ellerslie Road. Drivers, transit users, and nearby residents should expect ongoing traffic flow changes and travel impacts around the corridor.

Watch for construction notices, lane changes, and posted detours near 111 Street and 23 Avenue.

102 Avenue remains closed for Valley Line West construction

Valley Line West construction continues to affect 102 Avenue, which is temporarily closed to vehicle traffic between 107 Street and 102 Street for the 2026 construction season. Phase 1 started on March 16, 2026, and the work is happening in multiple phases.

For downtown and Oliver-area drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, this means one more route to rethink. It’s not glamorous, but knowing before you leave saves a lot of muttering at red signs.

Use posted detours and check the Valley Line West project page for phase updates.

For now, it’s road football, a new season, and the annual chance to convince yourself this is the year.

💛 Community Spotlight

Grey Nuns hopes to make NICU music therapy permanent

Grey Nuns Community Hospital is trying to turn a four-month NICU music therapy trial into a permanent program. The idea came from Rebecca Lappa, an Edmonton music therapist and master’s student, and the early response from families has been strong.

The program is designed to support premature babies and NICU families through bonding, calming, and emotional support. One family said the therapy helped their premature baby relax during a hospital stay, which is the kind of small sentence that carries a lot of weight when you’ve spent time around hospital rooms.

The hospital and Covenant Foundation are now looking for community support to fund a two-year version of the program. The cost could be up to $70,000, and the goal is to move it from a promising pilot into something families can count on.
