Hi Edmonton,

It’s one of those grey June stretches where you bring a jacket, regret not bringing an umbrella, then pretend you’re fine. We’ve got Folk Fest ticket chaos, a few City updates worth knowing about, and a very full run of Pride, food, music, and Indigenous History Month events this week. The one I’d tell a friend about first is the Tasty Truck Food Festival, because free entry and food trucks downtown is an easy yes.

— The Edmonton Edit

⚡ Quick Hits

  • Folk Fest passes are already moving fast. Classic Edmonton.

  • Dawson Bridge and Valley Line West work may mess with your usual route.

  • Tasty Truck Food Festival hits Fan Park this weekend with free entry.

🌤 Edmonton Weather

Today, Tuesday, June 9, is cloudy with a possible shower this afternoon, with a high around 21 C and a low near 10 C. Wednesday looks cooler and wetter, with showers and a high of 18 C, then Thursday stays unsettled with some sun before another possible shower. It’s not miserable, exactly. Just very Edmonton June. Keep a light layer and a rain plan handy if you’re heading to anything outside.

📰 What's Happening

Folk Fest tickets nearly sold out within two days

Edmonton Folk Music Festival tickets went on sale Friday, June 6, and they moved fast. Within two days, reports said passes were already nearly sold out, which is both impressive and not exactly shocking if you’ve ever watched this city plan its summer around Gallagher Park.

The festival runs August 6 to 9, 2026, at Gallagher Park. Four-day personal passes were reported as more than 90% sold shortly after sales opened. Saturday single-day tickets were also reported sold out early. That’s a lot of people locking in their hill spot before most of us have even figured out our July plans.

The fast sell-through says a lot about how much demand is sitting there well ahead of festival weekend. Folk Fest is one of those Edmonton events that doesn’t need much explaining. People either already have their tarp strategy or they’re learning fast.

For late buyers, the big thing now is availability. There may be fewer ticket options left, and anyone still hoping to go will likely need to watch for official resale or ticket-exchange updates. If you were waiting to “think about it,” this is your nudge. The city already did the thinking.

🏛 City Update

City encourages one Indigenous History Month action each week

The City is encouraging Edmontonians to take one meaningful action each week during National Indigenous History Month. Week 1 focuses on Indigenous History Month events and learning opportunities, Week 2 highlights the City’s Indigenous Artist-in-Residence program, Week 3 encourages people to learn the Indigenous ward names, and Week 4 points residents to the Wahigicicobi Indigenous Framework. It’s a simple roadmap, which is helpful because “learn more” can feel vague until someone gives you an actual place to start.

City-hosted and partner events continue through June.

Neighbour Day Contest opens June 12

The City’s Neighbour Day Contest runs from June 12 to June 20, encouraging residents to connect with people on their block or in their building. Neighbour Day is held on the third Saturday of June, and the City is also pointing residents toward block party and play street options. Free temporary road closure permits are available for eligible block parties. In plain English, this is a small push to get people out of the garage, off the group chat, and actually talking to the folks nearby.

Residents can plan activities and enter during the June 12 to June 20 contest window.

Traffic disruptions continue across major road and bridge projects

The City flagged traffic disruptions for June 5 to June 12, with ongoing construction affecting several major routes. Dawson Bridge rehabilitation includes lane impacts and planned overnight closures, while Valley Line West construction continues to affect parts of 102 Avenue. Terwillegar Drive Stage Three work has short-term lane closures, and 132 Avenue renewal is still affecting traffic in northeast Edmonton. Translation: check your route before you leave, especially if your day already has no margin for Henday-level surprises.

Closures and lane restrictions are expected to change as construction phases move through June.

🏒 Oilers & Sports

Oilers reportedly considering Mike Babcock as next head coach

The Oilers are reportedly looking at Mike Babcock as a potential head coach candidate, including consultation with the NHLPA. Nothing is finalized, so this is still in the “watch closely, don’t treat it as done” category. Babcock would be a huge-name hire, but also a controversial one, given he resigned from Columbus in 2023 after an NHLPA investigation. He also won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008, which is why this would instantly become a very loud hockey conversation here.

For a team in a win-now window with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the coaching choice matters a lot. A Babcock hire would draw attention for both the résumé and the baggage. Oilers fans would have opinions within seconds. Probably before the press release finished loading.
