Hi Edmonton,
It’s the kind of warm week where you leave the house in full summer mode, then remember Edmonton still likes to throw clouds and showers into the deal. Today we’ve got a big High Level Bridge debate, southwest construction headaches, free festivals, and one very Edmonton streetcar beer event. Personally, I’d be watching the bridge story closely, because that one touches traffic, heritage, the river valley, and a whole lot of local feelings.
— The Edmonton Edit
⚡ Quick Hits
The High Level Bridge debate is officially a big Edmonton identity question now.
Downtown project funding is open again, but only while money lasts.
UFest is back at Borden Park this weekend, and yes, it’s free.
🌤 Edmonton Weather
Tuesday is coming in mostly cloudy, very warm, and sitting around 30 C, which is patio weather with a side of “maybe don’t trust the sky.” Wednesday cools slightly to 25 C with a chance of morning showers, then Thursday jumps back into mostly sunny and very warm territory at 27 C.
No weather alerts are in effect for Edmonton. Keep sunglasses and a light rain layer in the car, because this city loves making you choose both.

📰 What's Happening
High Level Bridge replacement debate puts one of Edmonton’s most recognizable landmarks in the spotlight
Edmonton councillors are now asking the big question: can the High Level Bridge actually be saved? City administration has recommended replacing the more than 100-year-old bridge as part of long-term bridge planning, which is not exactly a small suggestion.
This isn’t just a traffic file. It’s the bridge people photograph, walk across, drive under, ride the streetcar on, and quietly use as shorthand for Edmonton’s river valley identity. Councillors discussed long-term plans for both the High Level and Low Level bridges at committee on May 25, and the High Level recommendation is already getting attention because administration is leaning toward replacement instead of more rehabilitation.
The cost question is where this gets heavy. Reporting from the committee discussion noted that keeping or replicating the existing bridge could add billions in cost. That’s the part where heritage love meets budget reality, which is usually where Edmonton debates get complicated fast.
There’s also the streetcar piece. The future of the High Level Streetcar remains uncertain because the current bridge is part of its route. For a lot of people, that streetcar is more than a summer novelty, it’s one of those small Edmonton things that makes the city feel like itself.
This matters because the decision could reshape how people move between downtown and the south side. It could also change one of the most recognizable pieces of the skyline. City staff and councillors are expected to keep working through replacement options, costs, scope, and whether any heritage or streetcar elements can be preserved before a final direction is set.
Terwillegar Drive construction ramps up as southwest commuters hit heavier delays
Southwest drivers, this one’s for you. Construction has ramped up around Terwillegar Drive and Anthony Henday Drive as Stage 3 of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion moves ahead, and the delays are already being felt in nearby neighbourhoods.
The project is meant to increase capacity and improve connections in one of Edmonton’s busiest growing corridors. That includes Windermere, Terwillegar, and the broader southwest, where traffic can already feel like a patience test on a normal day. Stage 3 includes a new northbound bridge over Anthony Henday Drive, while the existing bridge will eventually be repurposed for southbound traffic.
The interchange is also getting bigger. The work adds two loop ramps and upgrades the area into a partial cloverleaf. On top of that, Terwillegar Drive will be widened, transit lanes will be added, and a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge is part of the plan.
So yes, the short-term version is cones, congestion, and changing routes. Not fun. But the finished project is designed to improve movement for drivers, transit users, cyclists, and pedestrians in a part of the city that keeps growing.
Construction is expected to take about two years. Stage 3 is expected to be in service by 2028, which means southwest commuters are going to be living with this one for a while.

City seeks input on the Business Census and Downtown Policy Update
The City is inviting input as it continues work tied to Edmonton’s Business Census and Downtown Policy Update. The Business Census helps track where businesses operate, what sectors they’re in, and how Edmonton’s local economy is changing. Data collection runs from May through August and gathers basic information on business locations, sectors, and employment counts. What this actually means: business owners may hear from the City, and the results can shape future downtown and economic planning.
Business Census collection continues through the summer.

Zebra Centre adds new support dog as more children access help
Edmonton’s Zebra Centre has added a new dog named Nitro to its child-support team. The centre supports children and youth who have experienced abuse, working with partner agencies to help kids be heard and supported through difficult processes.
That’s heavy work. The dog program helps children and families during visits and related processes, giving them a calmer presence in moments that can be scary or overwhelming. A Ladies Off The Green fundraiser was held with a goal of raising $100,000 for the dog program, and the centre also reported an increase in children getting support in 2025.
It’s a small, tangible thing with a big human purpose. A dog in the room won’t fix everything, but for a child trying to get through a hard day, it can matter.
