Hi Edmonton,
20 degrees and mostly cloudy is basically a gift on May 1, especially after the kind of winter we just put behind us. Inside today: the Oilers' run ended in Anaheim last night, the province dropped $400 million on continuing care with a big chunk landing here, and the weekend's got a lot more on it than usual. Also, Big Bear Matcha finally has a permanent address, and it's right where it should be.
— The Edmonton Edit
⚡ Quick Hits
Oilers out in six. Ducks took the series 4-2, and Anaheim hadn't won a round since 2017.
Elections Alberta forced a separatist group's voter database offline after it published info on millions of us.
Old Strathcona Farmers' Market is open all weekend. Saturday 8 to 3, Sunday 11 to 3.
🌤 Edmonton Weather
Today's sitting around 20 with cloud cover and not much chance of rain, which is about as friendly as a May 1 in Edmonton gets. Saturday's a touch warmer at 21, Sunday cools off to 19, both mostly cloudy with light rain possible but not promised. Honestly, this is patio weather if you're willing to commit to a hoodie. No advisories, no excuses to stay inside.
📰 What's Happening
Court injunction forces Alberta separatist group to shut down online database built from electoral list

Source: Dan McGarvey/CBC
Elections Alberta has gone to court and won an injunction against the Centurion Project, a separatist-aligned group that scraped the provincial electoral list and posted personal information on millions of Albertans into a public, searchable database. If your name and address showed up there, that's not a small thing. It's the kind of breach that sticks with people.
The list of electors is shared with political parties and candidates under strict conditions, and using it for anything other than electoral work is potentially illegal under Alberta's privacy and elections laws. The injunction forces the database offline, and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has opened an investigation into whether a formal breach occurred. The maximum fine under the relevant legislation sits at $100,000.
Elections Alberta is the body that secured the court order, and the OIPC is now the one deciding whether to issue formal findings. Investigators are also watching for the data to resurface anywhere else online.
For Albertans whose information was exposed, the practical risks run from identity fraud to harassment, and this case is going to be a real test of how quickly provincial regulators can move when sensitive electoral data gets misused. Expect more enforcement if the database pops back up, and watch for the OIPC's findings in the months ahead.
Alberta commits $400M for 11 continuing care projects, with three Edmonton sites among the biggest
The province announced roughly $400 million for 11 continuing care projects across Alberta, and Edmonton walked away with a sizable share. If you've ever tried to find a long-term care or supportive living spot for a family member here, you already know why this matters. The waitlists are real.
Three of the largest investments are landing in Edmonton itself. Golden Age Meadow gets $75.3 million, Belle Rive Multi-Generational Housing in the north end gets $62.3 million, and the Beverly Heights Seniors Community Conversion gets $19.5 million. Just up the highway, Salem Manor in Leduc gets $45.9 million as part of the same package.
Across all 11 projects, the province is targeting more than 1,100 new continuing care spaces. That's the part that should ease pressure on Edmonton-area hospitals, where seniors waiting for placement currently take up beds the system needs back.
The real question is whether the timelines actually hold. Construction schedules and final bed counts will be confirmed by the operators of each site, with the province monitoring delivery against the announced funding.
🛒 Your Groceries Are Costing You $200/Month More Than They Should
I'll be honest — I used to think I was a decent grocery shopper. Then I spent weeks digging into how the savviest Edmontonians actually shop, and I realized I was leaving serious money on the table.
So I put everything into one guide: "Save $200/Month on Groceries — The Edmonton Insider's Guide."
This isn't generic "buy less avocado toast" advice. It's Edmonton-specific — which stores to price match at (and the exact words to say at checkout), which day each chain marks down their meat and bakery, how to turn PC Optimum from a "meh" rewards card into $200-400/year in free groceries, and a full week of dinners for under $50.
The guide is $5. That's less than a single coffee. Most people make it back on their very first grocery trip.
🏛 City Update
Capital Line South LRT construction continues with new lane closure at 12 Avenue
Work is still chugging along on the 4.5 kilometre Capital Line South extension running from Century Park to Heritage Valley North. Lane closures along Blackmud Creek Bridge are still up, and now there's a new closure at 12 Avenue to make room for bridge and track work. South-end commuters, you know the drill. Leave a few extra minutes.
Closures stay active as bridge and track work continues.

Free open house at Don Wheaton Family YMCA paired with Hockey Playoffs Party

It's part of a 2026 series running free open houses at community recreation centres around the city. Easy way to test-drive a place without dropping cash.
More open houses in the series are planned through the year.
🏒 Oilers & Sports
Ducks eliminate Oilers 5-2 in Game 6, ending Edmonton's first-round series

Well. That's a bitter way to start May. The Ducks took Game 6 at Honda Center 5-2 and ended the Oilers' first-round series in six. Anaheim outplayed us when it counted.
Leo Carlsson, Troy Terry and Chris Kreider each put up a goal and two assists, and Cutter Gauthier added a goal and an assist. Lukas Dostal stopped 25 of 27 shots in the Anaheim net. On our side, Connor Murphy and Vasily Podkolzin found the back of the net, and Connor Ingram made 26 saves but didn't get the help he needed.
McDavid played through an ankle injury he picked up in Game 2, which tells you everything about how he was approaching this series. The loss closes the door on a run that had taken Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals. For Anaheim, it's their first playoff series win since 2017.
A long summer of questions starts now.

💛 Community Spotlight
Esquao Awards honour 17 Indigenous women from across Alberta

The Esquao Awards return to River Cree Resort at Enoch on May 7, and this year 17 Indigenous women from across Alberta are being recognized for the kind of work that holds communities together. Edmonton's own Gloria Fraser is being honoured in the health category, alongside recipients in education, community work, the arts and youth. These are people who show up year after year, often without much fanfare, and the Esquao ceremony is one of the few places that gives them a proper room and a proper night. If you've never been, the energy is something else. It's a good one to read about, share, or go to.
