Hi Edmonton,

That rain did not come to play. We're talking flooded roads, cold June layers, and a reminder that Edmonton weather will humble all of us right when we start trusting patio season. Inside today: Yellowhead flooding, possible parking changes, Hawrelak Park's return, and a free downtown festival that actually sounds worth circling.

— The Edmonton Edit

⚡ Quick Hits

  • Yellowhead flooding made Monday's commute ugly. Don't test deep water, ever.

  • Hawrelak Park is open again, which feels like Edmonton getting a piece of summer back.

  • Canada beat Uzbekistan 2-0 at Commonwealth in the rain. Very Edmonton send-off energy.

🌤 Edmonton Weather

Today is cloudy, cold, and wet, with a high around 10 C and a low near 8 C. That's not June weather, that's "why did I put the fleece away?" weather.

Wednesday stays cloudy but climbs to 18 C, then Thursday looks better with mostly sun and a high of 22 C, though a stray shower could still show up. A rainfall warning was still in effect late Monday for Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park, with Environment Canada warning about more rain, water pooling on roads, and possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Keep the waterproof shoes close and don't drive through flooded roads. It's never worth it.

📰 What's Happening

Heavy rain floods Yellowhead Trail as rainfall warning continues

Heavy rain flooded westbound Yellowhead Trail on Monday afternoon, forcing closures between 97 Street and 124 Street. It started as a lane reduction, then became a full closure through that stretch, which is about as fun as it sounds during a wet commute.

The rainfall warning covered Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sherwood Park. Environment Canada said heavy rain would continue through Tuesday, with another 20 to 50 mm possible and storm totals generally landing somewhere between 50 and 100 mm. Some localized areas could see up to 150 mm, especially east of Edmonton.

Officials warned that water could pool on roads and in low-lying areas. They also told drivers not to push through flooded roads, which should be obvious, but apparently still needs saying every storm season. Washouts are also a concern near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

For anyone driving, biking, or just trying to get across the city without turning into a soaked raccoon, this matters immediately. The biggest issue isn't just the rain itself, it's drainage, road safety, and what happens after several days of water collecting in all the wrong places. Rain was expected to become lighter Tuesday, with moderate rain still possible into early Wednesday in some areas.

City considers ending 15-minute free parking and adding paid parking at attractions

Edmonton drivers could see big parking changes starting in 2027. City administration is looking at ending the 15-minute free parking period, raising rates in high-demand areas, and testing paid parking at some city attractions.

The proposal is part of a broader curbside and parking program review. The stated goal is to improve turnover, make parking easier to find in busy areas, and support the program's financial sustainability. In regular-person terms: the city wants spots to move faster, especially in places where everyone is circling the block.

The plan could also bring paid parking to attractions like the Muttart Conservatory, Fort Edmonton Park, and the Edmonton Valley Zoo. CityNews reported the changes could increase parking revenue to as much as $10.4 million annually by 2028 if approved. That's a lot of quarters, though nobody uses quarters anymore.

This one touches daily errands, downtown appointments, and family outings. A quick stop that used to be free could become paid, and a zoo or Muttart visit may eventually come with one more cost to think about. Council was expected to review the proposed changes this week, with implementation beginning in 2027 if approved.

🏛 City Update

Capital Line South LRT construction continues on 111 Street

Major construction on the Capital Line South LRT extension is underway, with ongoing impacts around 111 Street and the Blackmud Creek area. Ledcor began major construction in 2025, and the work is expected to take 4 to 5 years before testing and commissioning. The project will extend LRT service south from Century Park toward Heritage Valley. Good long-term transit news, but for south Edmonton drivers and pathway users, this is going to be one of those "check the route before you leave" projects for a while.

Construction and traffic impacts will continue through the 2026 construction season.

Canada beats Uzbekistan 2-0 in rainy Edmonton World Cup tune-up

Canada's men's national soccer team beat Uzbekistan 2-0 at Commonwealth Stadium on Monday night. Jonathan Osorio scored in the 58th minute, then Jayden Nelson added another in stoppage time to seal it. The match was part of Canada's World Cup 2026 send-off series, and 46,164 people showed up despite the rain. That's a serious crowd for a soggy Monday. Edmonton showed up, ponchos and all.

💛 Community Spotlight

Harry Ainlay students and Edmonton seniors create City Hall exhibit together

Harry Ainlay High School students teamed up with Edmonton seniors to share personal stories and build a City Hall exhibit. It marked Intergenerational Day and the start of Seniors' Week, which is a pretty lovely pairing. The project connected students with seniors through stories, legacy, and the kind of listening that cities need more of. It's warm without being cheesy, and it feels especially Edmonton because so much of this city runs on quiet community work that doesn't always make a big splash. This one did, and I'm glad it did.
