Hi Edmonton,

The sun is trying to come back, which feels fair after the weekend we just had. Inside today, Edmonton's stormwater alert is over, ETS has a few summer curveballs, and there's a free Pride night market at the Aviation Museum that sounds worth knowing about.

— The Edmonton Edit

⚡ Quick Hits

  • Edmonton can use water normally again after that very soggy weekend.

  • Southside LRT riders, June 25 to 29 is replacement bus time.

  • Mike Babcock behind the Oilers bench is going to be a whole conversation.

🌤 Edmonton Weather

Tuesday starts cloudy, then gives us some sun with a high of 23 C.

Wednesday looks like the real patio day: mostly sunny, 25 C, and not trying to soak your shoes. Thursday is still warm, but there could be a thunderstorm in spots by the afternoon.

Keep the umbrella nearby. Edmonton weather loves a plot twist.

📰 What's Happening

Edmonton stormwater alert lifted after weekend rain overwhelmed systems

A water supply alert issued after heavy rain strained Edmonton-area stormwater systems was lifted late Monday. Officials said conditions had stabilized, so residents could go back to normal water use.

The weekend rain was a lot. Edmonton and the region received more than a typical month of June rain, with Environment Canada totals around 95 to 102 mm in Edmonton and about 73 to 78 mm at the airport by Monday afternoon.

Residents and businesses had been asked to cut back on showers, laundry, dishwashing and flushing. Emergency alerts also went out in nearby communities, including St. Albert, Beaumont, Stony Plain, Tofield, Wabamun and parts of Lac Ste. Anne County.

The big thing is the sewer-backup and flooding risk. Even if your block was fine, this kind of rain puts pressure on systems across the city.

Officials said EPCOR and the City will keep watching drainage and flood-prevention systems. For now, normal routines are back.

🏛 City Update

ETS summer service changes began June 21

ETS has started its summer service changes, so regular riders should recheck their routes before heading out.

The changes affect a long list of bus routes, including routes 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 31, 51, 52, 53, 56, 101 to 199, 500 to 599, 700 to 799 and 900 to 999. School specials are also paused until September.

The biggest local shift is in Capilano and Gold Bar, where Route 522 conventional service has been removed. On Demand Transit now connects riders there to Capilano Transit Centre, and 12 regular stops are being converted to On Demand stops.

Route 31 also started using the dedicated bus lane built as part of the Terwillegar Freeway Expansion. Basically, this is one of those weeks where checking the app before leaving is worth it.

Capital Line replacement buses scheduled June 25-29

Capital Line trains will not run between South Campus-Fort Edmonton Park and Century Park from June 25 to 29.

Replacement buses will run between those stations during service hours from June 25 to 28. Regular service is scheduled to return at the start of service on June 29.

There is also a separate closure on the evening of June 27 between Government Centre and Century Park for communication line repairs. If you use the southside LRT, build in extra time and maybe bring your patience.

132 Avenue Renewal construction continues with new closure planned

Construction continues on the 132 Avenue Renewal project between Fort Road and 127 Street.

The work includes road reconstruction, paving, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street lighting. Right now, 132 Avenue remains closed from 121 Street to 126 Street and from 127 Street to 128 Street.

A new closure from 90 Street to Delwood Road is planned for June 25, weather permitting. For drivers, transit users and nearby residents, this means more detours and construction noise along the corridor.

🏒 Oilers & Sports

Oilers name Mike Babcock head coach

The Oilers named Mike Babcock as head coach after the NHL cleared him to return to coaching.

That is not a quiet hire. Babcock is returning to an NHL bench seven years after his last NHL coaching job, and the move follows league review tied to his 2023 exit from Columbus.

D.J. Smith was also listed as joining the staff as associate coach. The Oilers have been busy elsewhere too, with new five-year deals for Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy.

For a win-now Oilers roster, this is a major franchise call. Watch for the full staff rollout, player reaction and roster decisions before training camp.
