Hi Edmonton,
This May long weekend is coming in sideways, with cold wind, rain, and that classic Edmonton feeling of checking the calendar twice because it should not be this chilly. We’ve got a spring storm to watch, big road work in the southwest and west end, a major Oilers coaching shakeup, and a very good list of things to do if you’re willing to layer up.
The one I’d be texting a friend about? Knoblauch being out after back-to-back Cup Final runs. That’s not a small offseason note.

⚡ Quick Hits
Edmonton’s weekend weather looks rude. Wind, rain, and single-digit highs.
Terwillegar Drive Stage 3 is underway, so southwest commutes may get weird.
The Oilers fired Kris Knoblauch. Yep, after two Cup Final runs.
😂 Joke of the Day
I told my wife she should embrace her mistakes.
She gave me a hug.

🌤 Edmonton Weather
Friday looks like a hood-up, hands-in-pockets kind of day. Edmonton is mainly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers late morning and afternoon, a high of 8°C, and northwest wind at 30 km/h gusting to 50.
Saturday is even less friendly, with periods of rain and a high of just 6°C. Sunday improves a bit with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 12°C, which might feel amazing only because Saturday exists. If you’re heading to a market, game, or outdoor museum stop, bring layers and don’t trust the sky.

📰 What's Happening
Spring storm brings damaging wind risk and cold May long weekend weather
A strong spring storm moved across Alberta this week, and Edmonton is getting the cold, windy version of May long weekend. Not exactly patio weather. More like “secure the recycling bin before it ends up in another postal code” weather.
The system brought damaging wind risk, rain, colder temperatures, and possible snow in parts of the province. Environment and Climate Change Canada warned of strong northwest winds, with some areas in Alberta facing gusts around 90 to 100 km/h. Edmonton was expected to see winds in the 40 to 80 km/h range, along with less than 30 mm of rain. That still matters here, especially for anyone with outdoor plans, soft shelters, yard items, or a fence that’s already had a rough winter.
The main local risk is damage from wind, including roofs, fences, branches, and unsecured outdoor items. The cold air behind the storm also sticks around into the weekend, with showers or rain possible Friday and Saturday. So yes, the May long weekend is technically here, but the weather did not get the memo.
This matters because people are trying to plan markets, road trips, yard work, and family stuff, and the forecast is making all of that less simple. The practical move is to check current alerts, secure anything loose outside, and keep an eye on possible transportation or utility disruptions if winds strengthen again. Edmonton can handle ugly weather, but it’s still annoying when it shows up in mid-May.
Alberta announces new auto insurance rate cap tied to care-first model
Alberta is adding an adjusted rate cap as it prepares to move drivers into its new care-first auto insurance model in 2027. For Edmonton drivers, this is one of those policy stories that sounds dry until your renewal notice shows up. Then it gets very real.
The care-first model is scheduled to begin January 1, 2027. Under the announced cap, insurers won’t be able to raise average rates by more than 5%. Average drivers renewing policies would face a maximum premium increase of 10%. The province says drivers with basic coverage are expected to save an average of about $366 per vehicle.
The bigger shift is not just about premiums. The new model also changes how injury claims are handled after collisions, which means the system people deal with after a crash will look different. That’s why this will keep getting attention, even if the headline number is the rate cap.
For drivers, the promise is more predictable rate increases and potential savings. The question is whether those savings actually show up when people renew. The province says it will monitor the transition and could take more action if the promised savings don’t appear for drivers.

🏛 City Update
Terwillegar Drive Stage 3 construction begins

The City has started Stage 3 of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion, one of southwest Edmonton’s major transportation projects. Construction began in early May 2026 and is expected to take about two years. The work includes a new interchange over Anthony Henday Drive, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge, transit-supporting upgrades, and active transportation improvements.
For southwest commuters, cyclists, nearby residents, and future transit users, this is a big corridor change. Translation: long-term payoff, short-term patience.
Two lanes of traffic are expected to stay open in each direction, but short-term daytime and occasional nighttime lane closures may happen.

2026 Property Tax Notices Are Out
Edmonton property owners should keep an eye on their mailbox. The City of Edmonton has mailed out 2026 property tax notices, with payments due by June 30, 2026. If you own property in the city, now’s a good time to review your notice, confirm the amount owing, and plan your payment before the deadline.
95 Avenue renewal resumes with major traffic impacts
Construction has resumed on Stage 2 of the 95 Avenue Renewal project between 163 Street and 170 Street. The full project covers 95 Avenue between 163 Street and 182 Street, with Stage 2 picking back up in late April as part of the second year of work. Eastbound southern lanes are closed from May 11 to October 2026.
The work includes road reconstruction, sidewalks, curbs, lighting, shared pathway construction, parking bays, bus stop upgrades, and low-impact drainage. For west Edmonton drivers, pedestrians, ETS riders, and nearby residents, this means lane restrictions, detours, and construction noise through the season.
The full renewal is expected to be finished in fall 2026.

🏒 Oilers & Sports
Oilers fire head coach Kris Knoblauch after three seasons
The Oilers have fired head coach Kris Knoblauch after their season ended with a first-round playoff loss to the Anaheim Ducks. That’s a heavy move, especially because Knoblauch led Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025. Edmonton is not exactly a calm hockey market, but this one still lands hard.
Assistant coach Mark Stuart was also relieved of his duties. General manager Stan Bowman said the club needed a different voice behind the bench. Knoblauch’s contract extension was scheduled to begin in the 2026-27 season, which makes the timing even sharper.
No replacement had been named at the time of the announcement. Now the Oilers go into the offseason with a full coaching search and a championship window that still has everyone staring at the clock.

Ben’s Day at Popeyes returns to support the Ben Stelter Foundation

Ben’s Day is back at Popeyes in support of the Ben Stelter Foundation, and this one will hit home for a lot of Edmonton families. Ben’s story became deeply tied to the Oilers and the city, but the work now goes beyond hockey.
The fundraiser honours Ben Stelter’s birthday and supports the foundation’s work around childhood cancer care. The inaugural Ben’s Day raised more than $31,000, and the 2026 campaign is aiming to raise $50,000 for families facing childhood cancer. Funds support access to advanced treatments and help for families navigating cancer diagnoses.
Lea Stelter and Synergy Franchising COO Kyle Ferbey appeared on Global News Morning Edmonton to talk about this year’s return. It’s local, personal, and very Edmonton in the way people keep showing up for a kid whose legacy still moves the city.
